Welcome to Reusel-De Mierden
Reusel-De Mierden consists of 4 small communities: Hooge Mierde, Hulsel, Lage Mierde and Reusel. This border town in the south of The Netherlands has a lot to offer ranging from fine country life and the hospitality that goes with it to art and museums. It is also a great base for city trips within The Netherlands or to Belgium. Needless to say that visitors keep coming back to this area.
What makes this area special?
Nature’s influence is everywhere: in the scenery, every-day life, the food. There are picturesque villages to explore, like Lage Mierde where one can visit “Landgoed De Utrecht”. There are also large nature reserves to visit, like “De Moeren”, which is with its 150 hectares (nearly 371 acres) unique in The Netherlands and a haven for the more uncommon species (wild-life, flora and fauna). Bird lovers just have to visit “Beleven”. Not only birds can be spotted there though, there is a wide range of wild-life to be found, so it really is a joy for every wildlife lover. Nature lovers have plenty more to choose from: nature reserves like “Zwartven”, “Neterselse- en Mispeleindse Heide” and “Panneven” are must-sees!
Like other border towns, smuggling was of common occurrence, even more so in hard times. Legends of infamous smugglers are still being told. The most striking these days is the simple fact that the border seems to have gone. Seems to have gone, because if you look carefully there are still physical marks that show us where the border is.
Agriculture flourished in this area, though it must be said that “conventional” farming is decreasing in favour of biological farming and agriculture-related activities.
Pick and choose
Easy to reach by road, Reusel-De Mierden offers year-round short breaks or longer holidays that can be as active or as laid back as you wish. Walking and cycling or mountain bike-routes are there to be enjoyed if you like to be active. If you want more relaxing things to do, just enjoy a quiet cup of tea in any of the picturesque villages, visit the market on Friday in the centre of Reusel or visit one of the farms or other agricultural businesses that opens its doors to the public. The latter not only being educational, but definitely great fun as well.
Places to stay range from hotels to caravan parks, from welcoming B&B’s to camping sites. There is an equally wide choice of restaurants and cafés.
